The Adaptive Dialogues project was concerned with how to design a single user interface which adapts to the needs of different types of user. This research project demonstrated the feasibility of mounting User Interface Management Systems on an ICL PERQ/UNIX. A number of experiments were undertaken with 40 secretarial staff to examine the relationship between cognitive style and preference for user interface design. The project produced clear evidence that different user interface designs result in performance differences between field-dependent and field-independent people. |
